Illinois Economics Challenge - 2014

The NVHS Econ Challenge team participated in the 2014 Illinois Economics Challenge State Finals, a program of Econ Illinois. The event, held April 10th at the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago, involved 40 high school students competing for the Championship title. Team members consisted of Colin Pinto, Daniel Margosian, Larry Li, and Jack Donahue

The championship event consisted of written individual and team tests as well as a quiz bowl round of competition. This year 394 students participated in the online round of competition in March, with 10 teams qualifying for the state event. Willowbrook High School outscored Second Place York Community High School during a close final round in the state competition. The winning teams each received a trophy and framed certificate for their school, individual medals and certificates as well as Visa gift cards.

The Illinois Economics Challenge (ILEC), a program of Econ Illinois, is a Money Smart Week event. Partial funding is provided through BMO Harris with in-kind support provided by the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago.

Capitol Hill Stock Market Game - 2011 & 2012

2011 and 2012 Capitol Hill Stock Market Game team winners in Washington D.C. with Congresswoman Judy Biggert. Congratulations to Mr. Geers, Kunal Kochar, Shamil Shafi, Shane Shafi, and Brad Stimple!

For the 2011 competition, these students managed a hypothetical portfolio of $100,000. This was a national competition involving 1,564 teams of 3-5 students, from all 50 states. They took FIRST PLACE with a portfolio value of $171,675.10! What is even more impressive is this includes a 2% transaction fee, which cost them more than $62,000. In addition, the second place team, from Oak Hill HS in Maine, ended with a portfolio value of $134,547.86. This accomplishment earned them a trip to Washington, DC to meet their Member of Congress (Judy Biggert), tour the nation’s capitol and see first-hand how our national economic policies are developed.

The team made an amazing and unprecedented return to Washington D.C. after taking second place in the nation in the 2012 competition, the first time a team has ever repeated since the program started in 2004.
